How to Obey Traffic Laws & Instructions

Traffic laws are designed to protect you and other drivers on the road. While they can sometimes seem irritating or constricting, you must obey them or run afoul of the law. Follow these steps to learn the laws.

Instructions

    • 1
Read your state's drivers handbook. It's that handy booklet you skimmed right before you took your driver's test. Pick up a copy at your local DMV office so you can refresh your memory on the basic traffic laws. While you're picking up the booklet, pick up a few sample tests. The tests are encompassing of the handbook and will give you a good refresher of the more common rules of the road.

Pay attention to signs. Many people are so accustomed to their usual routes that they forget to look at the traffic signs. Failing to follow the instructions on a traffic sign can earn you a ticket.
    • 3
Use common sense. Yield to all pedestrians or bicyclists even when they aren't obeying the traffic laws themselves. Slow down when conditions warrant, regardless of the speed limit. Be aware of new traffic patterns. Note if others are driving erratically. Drive defensively.

If you've relocated or you're planning on spending an extended amount of time in a different state, brush up on their laws of the road. Every state has their own driving laws--some vastly different than others.
    • 5
In most cases, it's best to drive a little slower than you're sure of if you're not certain of the posted rules of the road. This of course is in most cases--you can get tickted if you're driving too slow, especially on highways as driving too slow is a hazard to other drivers.

Make sure your car is in as close to perfect working order as possible. Cracked windshields, missing or broken exterior lights, poor exhaust systems and even too many people in your car are grounds for a citation.
